Before the Ring and Proposal
Lauren and Mike were co-workers at the Discovery Channel in NYC when they first met. While visiting Lauren’s parents on Block Island in the spring, Lauren’s dad suggested taking a hike to search for the Block Island glass floats that are hidden on the island every year. After hiking all over Rodman’s Hollow with no luck, they decided to give the Second Bluffs trail a look. When they reached the overlook at the bluffs, Mike got down on one knee and proposed.
Block Island Because......
Lauren’s grandmother has had a house on Block Island for over 50 years. Lauren has been vacationing to Block Island every summer of her life and spent two summers waitressing at the Harbor Grill and living with her grandmother. Her parents bought their own home on Block Island seven years ago and have since moved here full time.
The Day and Design
Lauren and her nine bridesmaids, four flower girls, her mother, and the hair and makeup crew got ready at Payne’s Harbor View Inn, so the accommodations and space were perfect for such a large crew. The ceremony was held on the lawn of the Spring House, and a close friend of the couple officiated, making it very meaningful. The couple’s two nephews and four nieces walked down the aisle as ring bearers and flower girls.
The Wedding Weekend
Lauren and Mike planned their wedding in four months, and didn’t stress over the little details. The couple created a website on theknot.com that had information on transportation and lodging for their guests. They also created welcome bags for when their guests got to Block Island, with ideas of things to do around the island, and their favorite restaurants. Leading up to the wedding, Hurricane José was lingering, so Lauren and Mike were thankful when they woke up and saw that the weather cleared and it was a beautiful fall day. The rehearsal dinner was held in the big, bright room at the Hotel Manisses. After the rehearsal, Lauren and Mike invited the rest of the wedding guests to join them for welcome drinks — the space worked out perfectly.
What was the most Block Islandy thing about your wedding?
”The table names at the reception were named for different places from all around the island.”
Top 3 pieces of advice:
1. Use local vendors and vendors who are familiar with Block Island.
2. Try not to stress about the weather.
3. Having the ceremony and reception at the same place was convenient for guests.
